Power Boating for Dummies book written by Randy Vance, Editor-in-chief of Boating Magazine. As a life-long boater himself, Vance recommends checking the oil on your boat's engine each time you go boating. Sound excessive? It's not. The Coast Guard does a thorough check of their boats each day, including running the engines and checking the oil along with a multitude of other tests and gear checks to be sure they are "Semper Paratus" - always ready. You should do the same by checking the oil and replenishing it, if necessary, every time you boat.

CG Warns Northeast Boaters: Great White Sharks Present
The U.S. Coast Guard issued a warning to boaters in the Northeast to watch out for sharks over the Fourth of July weekend. However, since sharks don't keep holiday hours like we do, Northeast boaters should remain vigilant for the presence of sharks beyond the holiday weekend. Although great whites have been located only off the coast of Massachusetts, the advisory includes the entire Northeast coast. The Great White sharks are attracted to the area by the growing seal population, and while shark attacks on humans in the Northeast are rare, boaters and paddlers are advised to avoid areas where seals are spotted.
Weather Underground, the National Hurricane Center is currently watching two different areas for tropical storm activity. Invest 95L is about 125 miles west-southwest of the mouth of the Mississippi and it doesn't have much thunderstorm activity associated with it. The NHC give it only a 10 percent chance of becoming a tropical cyclone before landfall. On the other hand, Invest 96L has a 30 percent chance of developing into a tropical storm in the western Caribbean sea. "Computer models have 96L going through the Yucatan Channel then turning left and making landfall somewhere near the Rio Grande," says Carver.
